The Product: Traditional Mexican Talavera pottery pot in blue and white

An attractive, hand-painted, lidded pot decorated in the tradition of blue and white Talavera pottery from Mexico.

The Lowdown

Similar to majolica or faience, Talavera ceramics are essentially tin-glazed earthenware. The tradition and production methods were brought to Mexico from Spain during the colonial period. The industry originally centred around towns in Tiaxcala and Puebla due to the fine clay occurring naturally in these regions. The manufacture of these ceramics can be traced back to the 16th century. Blue and white were the traditional colourways.

Decorative lidded pots add shapely, sinuous curves to any still-life display – not to mention a pop of culturally-inspired pattern. And who doesn’t love a bit of blue and white? The handmade, hand-painted pot is in excellent condition – of no particular vintage – with no damage and measures 20cm tall x 11cm in diameter. It is back-stamped with the maker’s mark and Puebla, Mexico.
