The Product: Tulip vase
This ‘conversation-starting,’ blue and white, tulip vase, with a typical statement silhouette, embraces the Dutch design heritage. Quirky and unusual, the vase is a surefire head-turner. It’s definitely a bit ‘Marmite’ – you’re going to love it or hate it. But we are huge fans. The pretty, ovoid shape, elegant, painted decoration and brilliant Delft-blues have us smitten.
The Lowdown
Dutch tulip vases came into their own during the ‘Tulipmania’ of the 1630s in The Netherlands. These ‘exotic’ flowers, imported from Turkey, were greatly prized and sold individually for vast sums. Towering, stackable tulip vases or ‘pyramids’ were designed to showcase multiple cut specimens in individual spouts. These ‘showpieces’ decorated the hearths and tables of wealthy, Dutch nobles. Tulips also gained a role in Dutch floral still life art. Head to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam to see incredible examples of both pottery and paintings.
Styling Ideas?
The narrow shape and dimensions of the vase lend themselves brilliantly to decorating a hall console, windowsill, ledge or sideboard. A small bunch of blooms will suffice. Go with tulips for ‘tradition’, roses for ‘country garden pretty’ or unexpectedly sculptural specimens for ‘fresh and edgy’. Floral favourites aside, this showpiece display will complement classic homes, yet feel surprisingly modern in a contemporary setting.
