The Product: ‘Thrive’ Japanese bud vase
Available in cobalt blue (medium) or sea blue (small), this delicately hand-painted Japanese bud vase originates from the studio of talented ceramicist Miyu Kurihara. The Frankfurt-born artist studied art and textile design in both Japan and London. She employs traditional brush techniques to decorate each porcelain bud vase by hand. Watch this fascinating short clip to see the artist at work in her studio. Miyu draws upon her heritage, taking her cues from traditional blue and white Asian ceramics, as well as Japanese kimono designs. The results, however, possess a decidedly modern sensibility. Miyu Kurihara’s vase designs work well in a spare, architectural space. They would, however, be equally suited to a more rustic, cottage setting.
The Lowdown
On the hunt for a charming, hand-made gift for an interiors aficionado, lover of craft or fan of Japanese style? A Japanese bud vase by Miyu Kurihara may prove an unusual yet delightful choice. Whether birthday, house-warming or anniversary celebration, your stylish pal will no doubt adore the intricate hand-painting and quirky appeal of such a unique and thoughtful present. Perfectly portable and brilliant for creating an eclectic still life display. Simply team with other globally-inspired finds and juxtapose scale, style, pattern and texture.
Styling Ideas
Japanese bud vases are delicate items. Display on sturdy, immovable surfaces such as shelving, a mantlepiece, a ledge or recess – well away from small hands and wobbly furniture! A sweet addition to a guestroom bedside perhaps? Pop in a single bloom for a cheery welcome. They’d also look striking displayed as a group. Mixed heights and patterns on modern open shelving or along a mantel shelf. A single blowsy bloom such as a rose, anemone or carnation works well. Alternatively opt for a few sprigs of lavender or rosemary, the structural beauty of a lone thistle or arching eucalyptus stems.
The Detail
The cobalt/medium Japanese bud vase measures approx. 17.5cm (H) x 2.5cm (W). The sea blue/small bud Japanese bud vase measures approx. 15cm (H) x 2cm (W). They are internally glazed, so suitable for holding water. All vases are signed by the artist. See here for alternative vase patterns. Queries or questions? Annabel and the team had it packaged it up safely and securely and with me in no time despite the challenges of the pandemic. It’s ready now to put some springtime blossoms in – thank you!
