The Product: Print of the National Theatre
Both beloved and reviled, the Royal National Theatre building was designed by Sir Denys Louis Lasdun. Drawings of the National Theatre rarely convey the monumental form and futuristic vision of this notable example of Brutalist architecture. The divisive Beton brut concrete design has since become a Grade II listed building. Sir John Betjeman was delighted by the cube against the pale blue sky, and believed it to be “a lovely work and so good from so many angles.” The NT itself was founded in 1963 by Laurence Olivier and continues to be a strong source of income and creative expression for Britain’s theatre community.
The Lowdown
A signed Giclée, this line-drawn, wall-art print of London’s iconic National Theatre is presented on the highest quality, acid-free, lightfast, archival, 300gsm, Minuet Cotton Rag. The heavyweight etching board is velvety smooth with a fine surface texture and is one of the most widely used media, worldwide, for artwork and photography. Using pigment-based UltraChrome and Ultra Violet (UV) inks, the Giclée printing process ensures superior detail, colours and longevity. The print comes unframed and is delivered in a cardboard tube for you to take straight to your local framer.
Styling Ideas?
Need framing advice? We’d suggest a slim, white frame with subtly visible woodgrain and a white card mount, if you wish the frame to disappear – say, against a white wall – and the print to stand out. Equally as effective is the same style of frame in black – as here – also teamed with a white card mount, to outline the drawing and act like bold, precise punctuation! The third option would be to go for a softer, warmer effect with a natural or stained wooden mount. All three will work beautifully, depending on the backdrop, and the look you want to achieve. It’s worth knowing that artworks such as these will often leap out, to striking effect, from a dark-hued wall.
