The Product: Milana floral folk style wallpaper in Graphite
Introduce chic, tone-on-tone glamour with this deep, graphite blue/grey, folk style wallpaper. Russian-born surface pattern designer, Olga Shevchenko, created the beautifully-figured arrangement of flowers and leaves, for her homewares brand Olenka Design.
The Lowdown
Khokhloma handicraft, the inspiration for this pattern, is the Russian, folk art tradition of hand-painting turned, wooden pots. The style originated from villages along the Volga river in the late 17th century, when Russian icon painters, miniature artists and wood-turners combined their skills. The designs highlight the importance of nature and the forest in Russian history and culture through the ages. Today, ‘golden-hued’ Khokhloma woodenware is recognised as a vibrant, national, craft phenomenon. Olga used Khokhloma painting techniques she learnt at school to create this wallpaper design. Her intricate botanical designs, often featuring wildflowers, berries and leaves, feel smart and modern in a contemporary palette such as this.
Folk Art Wallpaper – Styling Ideas?
First, bold, large-scale florals work brilliantly with stripes. For a directional look, we can see this design on a feature wall with a narrow, toning grey pinstripe on the adjacent walls. In addition, the sleek lines of directional, modern furniture in white or wood would also look great with this wallpaper as the backdrop. The Detail
Milana Russian folk style wallpaper is sustainably printed in the UK. It is suitable for both domestic and commercial use. The design is printed onto 180gsm non-woven wallpaper. It is durable, fade resistant, PVC free and FSC certified. Each roll measures 52cm wide x 10.05m in length with a 52cm straight match. Please note this design is ‘paste the wall’ wallpaper.
