The Product: Monochrome lampshade in botanical Dutch wax print
This bold, monochrome lampshade, in African Dutch wax print fabric, lifts any interior scheme. Dutch wax is a form of batik printing. The lampshade, by Onua, adds definition, contrast, and chic, neutral appeal. The repeating leaf design reads as a crisp monochrome. However, the ground cloth is a little softer than a pure white and much like a piece of aged parchment with a barely-there, printed, crackle-glazed effect that adds depth and interest.
The Lowdown
The Onua brand name translates as ‘sibling’ in the ‘Twi’ Ghanaian dialect and reflects the brother/sister partnership behind the company. The Dutch wax fabric products themselves reflect the pair’s triple heritage. They were born in The Netherlands of Ghanaian parents and subsequently raised in the UK. Onua aims to convey African cultural heritage and make it accessible to western audiences. They are keen to emphasise the uniqueness of each separate region of the vast and vibrant African continent. Their focus is to promote the artistry and traditional cloth patterns of West Africa.
Styling Ideas?
These lamps would look fabulous on tall end tables either side of a sofa or flanking a bed on a pair of chests. I say chests because adequate reading light is so important when designing a bedroom and the lamp needs to be on a surface tall enough to cast sufficient light over your shoulder. The Detail
The monochrome lampshade fabric is made from 100% cotton and the PVC lining is fire retardant. The shade is available in two sizes: 21cm high x 40cm wide (shade diameter) or 18cm high x 30cm wide (shade diameter) and does not require a shade carrier (shade comes with an adjustable plastic ring that fits directly onto the bulb carrier of your table lamp base, ready to be screwed tight in place). The larger of the two sizes is illustrated in this lifestyle shot.
