The Product: Antique decorative wall plates set in blue and white pearlware
This elegant set of five decorative wall plates in blue and white pearlware was most likely made in the Staffordshire area in the 19th century. The hand-painted patterns and detailing have a naive, free-flowing quality to them and we think this is part of the plates’ appeal, along with their glowing, indigo-blue hues of varying intensities.
How to style plates for wall decoration?
Create an eye-catching display by hanging the plates so they meander up a wall in a random, asymmetrical trail – perhaps in a dining room or kitchen. Although the plates are a natural fit in a more classically styled interior, we think they would look most striking juxtaposed within a modern space: the single, traditionally decorative element in combination with sleek, minimalist furniture.

The Detail
The five plates are pearlware (lead-glazed), hence for decorative use only (unsuitable for food). Each measures approximately 25cm in diameter and has no backstamp. The plates display signs of their age such as tiny imperfections in the glaze and minor discolouration. Excepting one tiny chip to one plate’s rim (not visible when viewed from the front) and some wear to the underside of some of the plates (see images), the pretty, scalloped rims are all undamaged and the plates are in excellent condition overall.
